The Department of Veteran's Affairs, along with the Department of
Defense and the Pacific TeleHealth Hui entered into an agreement to
install the VAs Computerized Patient Record System, widely regarded as
the world's best, at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center in American Samoa.
LBJ is owned by the American Samoan Government, which is a US Flag
Protectorate.
The three of us, Val Rymanowski, Anne Rega, and Joe Tastrom have
subsequently returned several times after the agreement expired to
further assist in the implementation of CPRS. In May, 2006, we
implemented CPRS in the American Samoa Dept. of Health. Our goal
is to see that at every point of medical care delivery in the country, a
computerized patient record is available.
At this point, every prescription, lab test, and
imaging exam in the country is recorded electronically. With the
exception of some remote LBJ and Dept of Health Outpatient Clinics,
every care provider has electronic access to this clinical record.
